Compass Magazine: from print to a connected digital community
Helping an established print publication reach new audiences through LINE, local discovery, and CompassFest.
Compass had an established print publication. The challenge was to digitize the business and reach new audiences through the tools they already use. Across a multi-year relationship, 23 Systems helped connect its publishing, local business community, and CompassFest experiences.
The challenge
Build on the local knowledge and community behind Compass by extending its print publication into digital channels. The company needed ways to attract new audiences, meet customers where they already spend time—including LINE—and help local businesses showcase themselves to international customers.
What we built
We built digital channels around three connected needs: reaching readers through LINE, helping businesses present themselves to an international audience, and supporting CompassFest through an event management platform. Explore the project work below.
01 / A digital home for the magazine
02 / Meet new audiences where they are
The LINE-accessible experience brings Compass to a channel its audience already uses. A business directory lets local businesses showcase their offerings to international customers, with searchable listings, business profiles, and English and Chinese options. Movie listings give readers another way to explore the city.
03 / Help businesses improve international visibility
The directory includes an international visibility score: a practical checklist of how well a business presents information that helps foreign customers find and understand it. Items include an English business name, an English menu, photos, opening hours, and contact links. The score gives businesses clear, practical steps to improve how they present themselves to international customers.
04 / Bring CompassFest into the digital experience
The CompassFest event management platform brings festival information, schedules, sponsor placements, and vendor discovery into one mobile experience. A merchant entry point supports booth management, while attendees can explore the program and locate businesses on the festival map.
What changed
Compass expanded from a print-led publication into connected digital channels for readers, local businesses, and festival visitors. The work created new ways to reach audiences through LINE, showcase businesses to the international market, and support CompassFest.
